Sixty-five years
ago this September, my father and grandfather founded the company that
is today American Infrastructure. It is a different world now than it
was in 1939, and certainly a different industry. Embracing the benefits of new technology, however, is a given for any contractor today. It no longer sets one apart from another. It is leadership, something far less tangible, that separates the best from the merely competent. At American Infrastructure, we have conceived and implemented a program to build a depth of leadership that will ensure the company's growth and profitability well into the future. Building future leaders takes as much time and energy as building projects. It is how we continue to gain strategic competitive advantage in an industry where dirt, pipe, asphalt and steel have almost become commodities. Our initiative, Leadership Intensive, selects the most dedicated and committed people in our operating units and provides them with an 18-month program of training designed to grow and hone their leadership skills. Candidates for this training come from a pool of current employees and experienced new hires whose work histories show significant achievement and whom the Executive Committee expects will benefit most from Leadership Intensive training. Many candidates also come from our two-year Career Track program for recent graduates in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Accounting, and Finance. The Career Track program is built around rotation through various departments such as Project Management, Materials Production, Transportation, Finance and Administration. After Career Trackers become Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators or Finance Managers and gain experience, they, too, may become candidates for the Leadership Intensive Program. A cornerstone of Leadership Intensive is the completion of two projects. The first, an individual project, is focused on improving a specific process or system within the company. The second is a team project, assigned by the Executive Committee, with the goal of driving a key initiative. These are centered on creating and building competitive advantage. The work of past participants has helped to set our company apart from our competition. Without dedicated, forward-thinking leaders, creating an environment for employees to accept change is impossible. In 2003, aside from Leadership Intensive and the Career Track program, the American Infrastructure Continuous Learning Center offered 50 separate courses attended by more than 800 employees. Many attended more than one course, generating a total course participation of 2,600. We believe in the difference training makes in our ability to anticipate challenges, identify real issues, implement change and achieve positive, measurable results. It's what separates great companies from the merely very-good ones. The future is as wide as it is deep as it is long, and we look forward to making the most of every opportunity it has to offer. |
